Peace and love they said...

Peace and love they said...

I was supposed to use this poem by Major Michael Davis O'Donnell for a sketch dedicated to the Vietnam war victims (both sides) but as the sketch is still pending since a while now I take the liberty to apply it to the current conflicts with this drawing.

The poem was featured in the movie Hamburger Hill. Hamburger Hill.

We read it as a tribute to those who gave their lives (civilians and soldiers, no matter the citizenship, political convictions or religious beliefs).

« If you are able,
save them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance when you are leaving
for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment
to embrace those gentle heroes
you left behind.
